Lead by Example: How One Physician's Approach to Leadership Inspires Others

As a physician executive, I understand the challenges that come with leading a team in a rapidly evolving field. Over the past 24 years years, I have learned that one of the most effective ways to inspire and motivate others is to lead by example. As a physician executive, you have a unique opportunity to inspire and motivate those around you. Your leadership style can have a profound impact on your healthcare organization, from the way your staff interacts with patients to the overall success of your institution.

Leading by example means that you model the behaviors and values that you want to see in your staff and organization. This style of leadership can help to build trust, create a positive culture, and improve the quality of care you provide to patients. Here are some tips on how to lead by example as an influential leader:


Here are ways I strive to lead by example in my role as a physician leader:

  1. Be visible and accessible: Make a point to be present and engaged with your staff and patients. This could mean walking the halls of your hospital, attending meetings and events, or regularly checking in with your team.

  2. Lead with empathy: Recognize that your staff may be under a lot of stress and pressure, especially in healthcare. Take the time to listen to their concerns and provide support and encouragement.

  3. Hold yourself accountable: Take responsibility for your actions and decisions, and be willing to admit when you make mistakes. This can help to build trust and credibility with your team.

  4. Communicate clearly and openly: Set clear expectations for your staff and provide regular feedback. Be transparent about your goals and priorities, and encourage open and honest communication from your team.

  5. Continuously improve: Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices in healthcare, and be open to new ideas and approaches. This can help to keep your organization competitive and improve the quality of care you provide.

  6. Prioritize patient-centered care: Put your patients' needs and safety at the center of all your decisions and actions. Encourage your team to do the same, and provide resources and support to help them deliver the best care possible.

  7. Foster a culture of collaboration: Encourage teamwork and collaboration among your staff, and model this behavior in your own interactions with others. This can help to improve communication, reduce errors, and increase efficiency.

  8. Empower your staff: Give your staff the tools, resources, and support they need to do their jobs effectively. Provide opportunities for professional development and growth, and recognize and reward their contributions.

  9. Lead with integrity: Model ethical and moral behavior, and hold yourself and your staff to high standards of professionalism and conduct. This can help to build trust with your patients, staff, and community.

  10. Celebrate successes: Take the time to recognize and celebrate the successes and accomplishments of your staff and organization. This can help to boost morale and create a positive culture of excellence.

Leading by example is not always easy, but it is a powerful tool for inspiring and motivating others. As a physician leader, I am committed to leading by example and encouraging my team to do the same.
